Find the original when the metadata is gone

A fingerprint is a compact description of what a file looks or sounds like. We compute it from the file you publish and keep it on our servers, scoped to your account. Verification compares a copy against it.

A match is a lead back to the record your account signed, never proof. Picture: AI-generated illustration.

How fingerprints are kept

  • Server-side and private

Fingerprints are recovery signals. They are not returned by any public response and not shared between accounts.

  • One in the manifest

Only ISCC Image-Code enters a manifest, as the image soft binding. Every other fingerprint stays on our servers.

  • Recovery, not proof

A fingerprint match is reported as recovery, a lead to your original. Only an intact signed manifest establishes validity.

Omit fingerprint_algorithms for the default set, or send a list to replace it. ISCC Image-Code is always added for images, and at least one fingerprint is required.

What each one is good at

In our own testing, which transformed a fixed corpus with re-encoding, resizing, cropping, overlays and rotation:

  • ISCC Image-Code handles JPEG re-encoding, resizing, colour changes and added borders. It is weaker on crops, rotation and overlays.
  • DINOv2-S handles crops and overlays, and held up best of the image descriptors we run.
  • PDQ handles flips and 90-degree rotations and is widely used for hash sharing.
  • Chromaprint handles codecs, noise and re-recording, but not pitch or tempo changes.
  • TMK+PDQF matches re-encodes of a whole clip; vPDQ matches partial clips frame by frame.

Which requests fingerprint

Request fieldsFingerprints
"watermark": true, "fingerprint": trueYes, with a watermark and a C2PA manifest
"fingerprint": trueYes, with a C2PA manifest and no watermark

Billing

One fingerprint unit per image, or per started second of audio or video. Units are graduated per month, from $0.015 down to $0.0025, and billed separately from signing and watermarking.
